G'Day Sizzlers!

Another couple of weeks have slipped by and a lot is happening behind the scenes at Sausage. Although stressful for the staff, it should see us moving forward with new and exciting projects very rapidly!

While all of these happening are taking place, I am attempting to keep the Sizzler going forward as best as possible. We have some more great articles and opinions, so I will leave you to it.

Read, learn, then implement.

Keep on sizzling!

Sponsor - Sausage Hosting - What our Customers have to say
Make Sausage your one stop shop for all of your web needs!

Don't let us tell you how good we are, here is what one of our customers have to say:

The Manager,

I thought I would drop you a quick note to show my appreciation of the product and service you provide.

As I had been experiencing a few problems with the ISP I had been using for the past 6 years, a few months ago I decided that I would check out what options there were for hosting my 6 web sites. I sent a few questions to Sausage Hosting and immediately had a reply from Damian answering all the points I raised.

We communicated several times concerning several concerns I had and after getting very positive replies from Damian I decided that when the sites came up for renewal I would change them to Sausage Hosting along with the domain names.

This has turned out to be a very good decision as the service we have received has been terrific.

In the past when we had an issue with the ISP it could take up to a day to get a reply and even more to get a problem resolved. With Sausage Hosting we get a reply within 30 minutes and with a couple of problems we have had (even though they were our problems on the scripts we were using and not Sausage Hosting's fault), the problems were fixed by your team at Sausage. I could not ask for more.

In addition to the service the options you provide for hosting and the facilities included would have to be hard to beat. I know my previous ISP was not in the race to compete in benefits or price.

Keep up the excellent service and I wish you the success that you deserve.

Yours Sincerely

Stephen Hammond-Parker

HotDog Helper - Ergonomics

Ergonomics is about helping you to work more effectively and more efficiently as well as considering the physical aspects such as layout, eye-strain and seating.

HotDog's Rover is a great feature allowing you to work better and save time by utilising up to three views to help you create fantastic pages. You can view the code of the web page you are creating in the editing pane, preview your web page in another pane using Rover and view the code of another document in the final pane. This means you no longer have to navigate between windows as you can compare code directly and view the results live. (Rover stands for Real-time Output ViewER). The inclusion of rulers in Rover also makes sizing and debugging a whole lot easier.

This is especially useful if you update your websites on a regular basis or if you copy code from one document to another. You can also change many of Rovers features in the Preferences so it behaves exactly the way you want, including automatic live updates.

However, some people may prefer to also use an external viewer - such as Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, or any of the excellent browsers - but find that switching from one window to another a tedious and time-consuming task. All you want is HotDog side-by-side with your favourite browser so you can move your move from one to the other effortlessly and I'll be showing you how to do that in next week’s newsletter.

Flash Wizard 98/ME/NT/2000/XP Freeware

I love the software that Crazy Ivan Productions comes out with. I have featured a lot of it in the past and it is the core of our Graphics ToolKit.

Now this little program is freeware that allows you to import Flash files (swf) and generate the proper Object and Embed statements for any given .swf file. It works for both Flash 5 and Flash MX file types.

  Tips & Tricks

Error Pages

What happens when you get an error page and what can you do about it?

The error pages come in a variety of forms, but are customisable by the webmaster.

For example:

Sorry We're sorry, but the requested URL does not exist. Please e-mail support@your_domain.com if you need further assistance.

Such messages are called error documents, and are web pages designed to give a polite explanation for error conditions. These error conditions generate numbers that are used to refer to the appropriate error condition. Some of the most common messages are as follows:

Error in Client
400 Bad syntax
401 Unauthorized
402 Not Used (Payment Granted)
403 Forbidden
404 Not Found - Most common

Error in Server
500 Internal Error
501 Not Implemented
502 Overloaded
503 Gateway Timeout

How do I customise error messages?

1) First, create the HTML page you want to use as your error message and upload it to your 'www' directory.

2) Next, create a .htaccess file and add lines which specify the substitution. Here are three examples of specifying error documents which will be called for a given error condition (note you can use relative or absolute addressing):

ErrorDocument 401 http://www.your_domain.com/401.html
ErrorDocument 403 http://www.your_domain.com/403.html
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.your_domain.com/404.html

Just add these lines to your .htaccess file.

3) Next upload the .htaccess file into your 'www' directory. You will not see it once uploaded since it gets hidden by the server.

4) Test is out. Go to http://www.your_domain.com/anything_you_want.html

There are a multitude of customised error pages - have you seen any that are especially good or rude? Let us know on the Sizzlerforums by going to www.sizzlerforums.com!
